How are you willing to suffer?

Snapchat--3554078203438458126It’s been 20 days since I started up this blog and posted an online self-disclosure. In this post, I would like to take on a different perspective of telling my story.

That is, how am I willing to suffer?

If I ask you, “What do you want out of life?” and you say something like, “I want to be happy and have a great family and a job I like,” it’s so ubiquitous that it doesn’t even mean anything.

Everyone wants that. So what’s the point?

What’s more interesting to me is what pain do you want? What are you willing to struggle for? Because that seems to be a greater determinant of how our lives end up.

I’m willing to suffer for dance. It takes more than just moving your body to the beat to call it a dance. I believe that dance is a form of art, and like all art forms, it takes up a lot of time. I spent a lot of time away from my family to go for practices, more practices and more self-practices, cancel dates due to vettings and competitions. I spent a lot of money going for classes, on costumes and competitions. Asking family and friends to come watch me dance takes up both their money and time too.

But why do I keep on dancing?

You feel light on your feet. Head distressed, your body gets some exercise too. It feels wonderful, when you first learn how to bounce to the music, meet friends who inspire and to finally fall in love with your body. Through dance, I learnt to be comfortable with my body and accepted it as it is. It has brought me heartache, but also joy, happiness and love.

I’m willing to suffer for precious memories, and insights. Starting this blog was to do just that. It is a pain selecting which photos to post, what to write about and just how much you want to self-disclose yourself. Being consistent on a blog is a challenging task.

This shot alone took up at least 50 shots. Much effort.

But even so, I want to do it. I decided to blog publicly to embrace social media as a Communications and New Media Major. This blog is meant to be part journal, portfolio and part travelogue (having traveled a lot in summer!). I’m very, very excited to start writing and post more adventures on this blog 🙂

The hassle of writing will never surpass the pleasure and satisfaction one gets once one organizes their thoughts properly in words. I would love to connect and discuss with people all around the world, especially about dance, travelling and daily practices in general! 🙂
