My favourite month, Ramadan, is finally here! While I abstain from food physically during this period, what I can do is write a post about the food I tried during my trip to Perth.
Disclaimer: I am not a foodie.
In General
To me, Australian food is very rich and sweet. I love their milk, chocolate and yoghurt though! Certain foods that my friends recommended including milo and honey cakes didn’t really live up to its name for me. Best to be able to taste first or buy in small quantities to avoid wastage. Was also told that their coffee is the best due to their strong coffee culture.
For reference on my itenarary, it’s here.
My Absolute Favourite!

This was my most enjoyable meal in Fremantle! It was my first time eating fresh oysters and it was really very nice and fresh. There was no hint of raw seafood smell too. Also, the portions for its fish and chips were huge, and we couldn’t finish it.

The most memorable experience about Cicerello was trying to eat in peace with the flock of seagulls around! I must say that they were very persistent and daring. They completely bent the seagull spikes and perfectly landed on the bars.

Evidently scared that the seagulls will S.O.Y
Coffee
As I’ve heard so much about the lovely coffee culture here, I should try some out, yeah mate?

Pretty good iced latte.

But sorry i cheated, I bought a cup of hot chockee. (But Janice bought coffee, so this counts!)

Toastface Grillah

I think this is a go-to spot for the younger ones, as the staff working at Sunglass Hut when we were shopping at Waterfront mentioned that the sanwiches here were the best.
They sell gourmet sandwiches and coffee. We went to the one at Grand Lane, and it was very rustic concept, all wooden chairs and tables. I think I picked Chilli Cheese, and it was really spicy because of the paparika. Their sandwiches are definitely different from other sandwiches, and it unkowingly fills your stomach.
Chocolate & Milk
As mentioned, I really love their chocolates and milk. Even the ones at the supermarkets are lovely, and I always buy the same brand – Oak brand. It has a lot of cool flavours. Koko Black and The Margaret River Chocolate Company are also popular chocolate spots.

The Lobster Shack

I remember Janice and I were slow to head to the lunch table, and we almost couldn’t sit together as it seemed like all the seats were taken up. Thankfully, we managed to squeeze our way in.

La Galette de France

We traveled out specially to eat breakfast at this cafe. They are synonymous for their almond croissants. We took a bus to get there.

The cafe is small and quaint in Nedlands, and had a cosy atmosphere, like the neighbourhood. There was a pair of elderly ladies beside us, sipping on coffee and catching up with one another. This is a popular spot, as we watched many come in to order, with some waiting for the food with their dogs outside the cafe.
Dessert!

There is always room for dessert. Heard San Churros was popular in Australia, so gave it a try. A funny memory comes with these churros. We left our hotel in the evening for Kmart at East Victoria Park. When we arrived, we had about one hour left to explore and shop before closing. We were so amazed at the price and range of it all. However, Janice forgot to bring more money, and I was also running out of money. We ended up using a card after panicking for a while.
After we were out from Kmart, we then only had about 20 minutes to buy everything we needed at Coles in that same building. It was a mad rush to buy everything we needed for our friends and family. And when we were at the counter, we found out that no plastic bags were provided! We had to use whatever bags/paper/jackets on hand to pack everything.
When we left, we thought, why not get some food here before we head back? So we headed to San Churros, and only realised there were many orders before us after we ordered.
We thought the ordeal was over. We realised there were no more bus services heading to the city! I thought it was easy to find a taxi, but alas. It was the most difficult thing ever (sorry Janice!). In hindsight, we were were stubborn because we were adamant about not using our credit cards to book via an app. We chose a more difficult solution. (But still a solution!)

I love, love, acai. I remember my acai in Melbourne was tasty and delightful. This acai was average, but it came with good memories. I video-called my mum and told her that I just skydived while she was hanging out with her good friend over ice cream. It was also at this point that we saw the friendly quokkas hanging around our feet!

This was on the night we met one of our good friend, Beaurhys, who was on a business trip in Australia at that time. It was a very nice catch-up over ice cream and forcing Beaurhys to take photos for us. The skyline at Elizabeth Quay was very beautiful at night. I remember the weather was very cool too.
Also bought some famous honey cakes from The Honeycake Shop in Fremantle. We were able to taste a sample before buying. It was nice when I tasted it, but when I brought it back to SG, the taste wasn’t as good, and was too sweet when I ate it in a bigger bite. I guess that is just my personal preference.

Hotel Food

When dining in restaurants overseas, I will typically order seafood or vegetarian food. This seafood dish was simple but tasted good with the rice and my earl grey tea. Janice had steak which was a really affordable dinner set meal. At this point in time, we were famished after spending a whole day of the Zoo, the Pinnacles and sandboarding at Lancelin. Another family from the same Klook Tour also had their dinner here. We were dirty all over from the sand, but food was more important. But Janice couldn’t finish her fries hoho.

I ordered room service one of the days because I was hungry at night. This was a vegetarian mushroom spaghetti dish.
Speaking of fancy restaurant food, we also ate at a restaurant facing a wine vineyard on our Margaret River tour which was pretty cool. The food was piping hot and crispy, fish and chips, with a scenic view. While I didn’t take photo of the food, I took a photo of this lady in green who shared her life story with us and resembled my grandma + my mum! The blonde lady besides her was travelling solo in Australia, which I thought was really brave of her.

Kebab

How could we ever forget about kebabs when travelling overseas? They are the go-to place. This was our very first official meal in Perth at Watertown. Eating hot food in open, cold weather. You could see our fresh and excited faces on our first day.
While there are other foods that we ate like more fish and chips, pizzas, Chimek, poke bowls and BUBBLE TEA, I think this list is good. This has been very enjoyable to write as I get to reminisce on good memories!
