If there is one thing I’ve learnt from the working world, is that you should never do more than you need to.
Because people may take advantage of your kindness to help, and try to absolve themselves of their own responsibility. The scary thing is, your efforts may not even be recognised and appreciated, and people may even complain about your work.
Thus, my rule of thumb – is to never stand out or make the first move.
I admit, it may be cynical take on life. Why should you care about what others think? Why don’t you do it for the greater good?

There are many intricacies to our interconnected lives. My supervisors have consistently said that I am too quiet and should speak up more. They say being quiet will be bad for my career progression in the long run, but I hope people respect that. There is more to life than just work.
I rather be known as a person with quiet confidence.
Next rule: As long as you do your best in what you are supposed to do.
Maybe I just haven’t found my calling.
But it’s ok. We have to continue working at it. Do your best in whatever that you are tasked to do, learn from others, and tap on your unlimited potential.

I’m truly grateful to have met the most humble, intelligent, and kind-hearted bosses, coupled with supportive supervisors so far. They motivate me to do my best, to always stay true to my values, and to be disciplined.
Final rule: Acknowledge that we all have different priorities in life.
We are so used to living in a competitive society. But there is no real need to compare your life with others. We would have seen countless of such quotes on Instagram.
All we need is a little compassion and empathy to get through it all.

Remember to have compassion for yourself as well. Practise self-care, as your own protection against negativity in your world. Self-care ensures that you stay healthy, sharp, motivated. It also boost your self-esteem and improves your mental health.
Some of the things I do: Keep a mindfulness journal, not having SMS alerts for work emails, taking breaks, laugh at memes and lame jokes, fall in love with the many Thai and Kpop idols, mini dance parties with the brother, embroidery stitching, talking to friends.
This is my take as a workaholic who tries to not be a workaholic. What are you own woes as you trek through the working world?
